I was born plus size.
I was raised by a strong proud woman and grew up a very happy child.
The age of four was when I first really noticed the disparity in the way people were treated, class, size and colour became increasing factors in how people grouped themselves.
I fell into advertising at 18, 30 years ago.
My first fashion client was a major lingerie company.
My second client was their plus size range, they forgot to book a model, so they did a sweep of the factory floor and my girlfriend at the time ended up cat walking for them.
That was my “real catwalk moment”. My Polynesian (Nuian) girlfriend walking, my friends and family working in the factory and warehouse and me designing the graphics and marketing. Brown, white, every size together, just amazing.
My second “real catwalk moment” was when I produced a poster campaign for a major women's rugby team, 26 women squad. Even though I was the creative director, I had to pitch in and help and apply make up to seven women. I would challenge anyone to sit opposite a woman, chat to her and apply makeup to her face and not appreciate how uniquely beautiful she is.
Roll on thirty years the industry’s a little monotonous so I took the opportunity to quit in 2017 to paint. I picked up a camera to take some reference pictures and voila.
One of my first assignments was a body positive shoot for eight women ranging from 18-70ish (I never did ask their ages) who wanted to celebrate themselves and their bodies just the way they are, no retouching or reshaping.
“real catwalk moment” number three.
There's been many fabulous, diverse campaigns and photoshoots over the years but these ones really pulled at my soul and set the tone for my work and philosophy on beauty.
I set up an art studio in wood street market for the past 16 months, I sold a lot of paintings even though it’s a very quiet market. But I did get a lot of women coming in and chatting.
And as well as telling me about their day to day stuff and health problems, identity and body crisis's, they kept mentioning they like the way I see women “as they should be seen”. So I had the bright idea to offer a photography service.
Two things then happened.
A 50 something year old grandmother Beverly posed for a body painted goddess picture and Annie wanted pictures to celebrate her 60th and that she is winning her ongoing battle with cancer in her underwear (OMG the twitter around the market was audible). This last year talking to women has almost broke my heart, but also made me more determined to work with women like Beverly and Annie. So in SEPTEMBER I quit the 6 foot studio at the market and have nearly finished building a more comfortable home studio space to do so. Finally we're up and running January 2020.
Ta dah… introducing the Goddess Studio. Essentially a safe space for boudoir and art nudes for every woman incorporating elements of fashion, pinup and art and their inner goddess.
All I have is empathy, enthusiasm and a few nice pictures, I’ve only been to my first burlesque show two months ago (totally amazing) and I've learnt about boudoir on the fly. But you know what empathy and a good heart goes a long way.
So my studio may not be the biggest or fanciest on the block, but I'm determined that no woman leaves my studio without a wonderful experience and feeling more fabulous about herself.
So I'll keep learning and refining poses and my photography skills as well as expanding my knowledge of lingerie and the arts like burlesque so your experience will be better than ever.
My offering is a bespoke photography service with hair and make up and some wardrobe. and My focus is celebrating all women, body and spirit.
That’s where you come in.
